TransVA Mountain 565 Resupply/Overnights

This is a complete list of resupply points and overnight options along the TransVA Mountain 555 route at specific mile markers from DC to Damascus (southbound). Items in this list include lodging (hotel, hostel, cabin, campground, primitive campsite), food (restaurant, country store, supermarket, gas station/convenience store) and water (public taps, springs or natural water source requiring treatment). Picnic and rest areas are also noted, as well as some points of interest. Each of these points has a corresponding waypoint in the RideWithGPS page (GPX file export). Please email any additions or corrections to bike@transvirginia.org.

9-DAY CAMPING ITINERARY

Average day: 60 miles (96km), average day climbing: 5,840ft (1780m), day length ranges: 47-77 miles/day (75-124 km/day)

This 9-day itinerary can be completed in a week and two weekends. With longer daily distances and significant climbing, this itinerary is recommended for stronger, more experienced riders with light setups riding longer summer days. For other options, consider the 13-day camping itinerary or 9-day hotel/cabin itinerary.

Day 1: DC to Snicker’s Gap

  • Water fountains at Great Falls
  • Water pumps at C&O Canal hiker/biker campsites (may need purification)
  • Grocery stores and restaurants in Leesburg (off-route)
  • Restaurants in Purcellville
  • Bear’s Den sells pizza and snacks
  • C&O Canal Hiker/Biker Campsites (Swain’s, Horsepen Branch, Turtle Run): all campsites have picnic tables, vault toilets and water pumps (water from pumps may require purification)
  • Hotels in Leesburg (off-route)
  • Bear’s Den: Hiker hostel on AT above Snicker’s Gap; camping, bunk bed, private room accommodation options
  • Air: Dulles and Reagan Airports in DC
  • Train: Amtrak Station in DC

Day 2: Snicker’s Gap to Wolf Gap

  • Convenience store in Pine Grove
  • On VA7 before Watermelon Park, J&J convenience store and Nall’s Farm Market
  • At US50 crossing: Shenandoah Mart convenience store (with hot sandwiches)
  • Grocery stores and restaurants in Stephens City (off-route)
  • Graden Market convenience store in Wheatfield (last food before Mathias)
  • At US50 crossing: Mountain View Hotel
  • Hotels in Stephens City
  • After crossing US11: Inn at Vaucluse Spring
  • Nice dispersed camping options with stream access in National Forest after Van Buren Furnace

Day 3: Wolf Gap to Switzer Lake

  • Spring on climb on SR691 after Wolf Gap
  • Misty Valley country store (off-route, N on WV259, at Mathias)
  • Bergton Country Store (last food before Stokesville [off-route] or West Augusta)
  • Hall Spring
  • Switzer Lake
  • Dispersed camping possible at top of SR691 climb, near spring
  • Lost Forest B&B (off-route on Lower Cove Run Rd, discounts for TransVA riders)
  • Lost River State Park (off-route on Howards Lick Rd, cabins)
  • Nice dispersed camping options with stream access in National Forest on German River Rd
  • Nice dispersed camping options on the south side of Switzer Lake

Day 4: Switzer Lake to Shaw’s Fork

  • Potable water at Todd Lake Recreation Area
  • Stokesville Market country store (off-route)
  • Mountain View General Store in West Augusta
  • Shaw’s Fork USNF Campground (stream access)
  • Various dispersed camping options in National Forest; several spots with stream access along North River
  • Todd Lake Recreation Area and Campground

Day 5: Shaw’s Fork to Douthat State Park
